Now is the time of the semester for you to show me what you have learned this term. The Final Exam will be counted 1/4 of your total grade. Your notebook will be counted for 100 points. Make sure it is easy for me to see that you've done most of the work this semester! You need to have notes, worksheets, homeworks, quizzes, and extra credits included in your binder.
If you faithfully go over and know how to do the questions from the review sheets, then you should do very well on your final exam. Good Luck to all!!! Happy Holidays!!!!

We finished learning how to solve polynomial equations today. The method to use is to graph the function, find one of the solutions, use synthetic division, and then factoring or the quadratic formula for the other solutions.

We learned how to solve polynomial equations by two methods: factoring whenever there is a GCF and using a graph, synthetic duvusuib, and then factoring when the polynomial ends in a constant. We also used factoring to solve quartic equations.

Algebra 2H pd 1
After going over the hw on long division of polynomials, we learned a shortcut way of dividing polynomials called synthetic division. We also went over the Remainder Theorem, which states that the remainder in synthetic division = the substitution answer.
HW Worksheet -Do all problems.... # 9-12 are long division and # 13-16 are synthetic division problems. For # 17-20, use both methods (substitution and synthetic division). Bring your calculators to class on Monday!!!

Monday is the quiz on Parallelograms and the other Special Quadrilaterals (rectangle, rhombus, and square). Also, you have a problem with the midpoint of the hypotenuse beting equidistant from the three vertices of the right triangle. There is one proof on the quiz-similar to the proof done in Friday's class.

After going over the hw on lesson7.1, we learned how to factor the sum of cubes and the difference of cubes. The formula to follow should be in your notes or the textbook. We also factored polynomials with four terms by grouping, and polynomials with a gcf.

Today, we started Chapter 7 which is on Polynomial Functions. We will be examining cubic, quartic, and quintic functions. Today, we went over Section 7.1 which included an activity with the graphing calculator to examine the number of U-Turns in the graphs.
HW Worksheet 7.1- Do all questions on this worksheet. For # 3, it is not a polynomial because the variables are in the denominator, which is not allowed for polynomials.

EC problem.....Sketch the graph of y= -x^4 + 2x^3 +13x^2 - 14x -24. Describe its general shape in terms of U-turns and letter shape.

Today, we went over the five methods for proving that a quadrilateral is a parallelogram. You will be quizzed on these 5 methods tomorrow. You will just have to write them out with a diagram to match your words.

After going over some hw problems on curve fitting quadratic equations to data points, we started the next Chapter 5 lesson on Solving Quadratic Inequalities. This seemed like a review lesson to some of you! We also showed how to graph the problems for the solutions.

We learned how to write a quadratic equation which contains 3 ordered pairs of numbers. The form is: f(x)=ax^2 + bx +c. We also verified our results on the graphing calculator using a statistics plot with the quadratic equation going through the 3 given points.

HW Find the measurements of the lettered angles in the picture problems on the back of today's classwork. Also, your projects on Polygon Pictures is due on Monday...

EC On a sturdy piece of cardboard or a folder, draw a large scalene triangles. Find the 3 medians of your triangle by measuring each side to get the midpoint. Label your centroid. See if a pen or pencil will balance your triangle at this point.

After reviewing the hw problems, we graphed complex numbers, solved some complex number equations, and found out how to find the absolute value of a complex number.

An extra credit picture puzzle on complex numbers was also given out.
It is due on Monday before the start of class. Also, watch the tv show "Numbers" tonight at 10pm on CBS, and write a paragraph summary of the show.

After going over all of the hw problems, we learned about the powers (exponents) of i, the imaginary unit. We also went over how to multiply and divide complex numbers. All answers must be in standard form (a+bi).

After going over the hw paper on finding all of the angles of a complicated picture, we went over Part One of the lesson on Isosceles Triangles. There are 2 basic theorems to Learn: Base angles of an isosceles triangle are congruent + If the base angles of a triangle are congruent, then the sides opposite those sides are congruent. Tomorrow, we will go over proofs!!!!

After reviewing the quadratic formula hw, we learned about b^2 - 4ac being called the discriminant. This number tells you how many real solutions are in the quadratic equation. It does NOT tell you what those solutions are. We also started the unit on complex and imaginary numbers. We learned the i=sq root of -1.
HW pages 319-320 # 4-7 all, 9, 10, and #38,40,46, and 48.
EC problem....Find out on the internet what mathematician is credited with creating imaginary numbers.

Today was the quiz on SAS, ASA, and SSS postulates as used in proofs. The quiz covered Sections 4.1-4.3.
HW - Try to find the measurements of all angles on the top figure of the worksheet given out at the end of today's class.
EC problem....Explain how to find the measure of the 4th angle of a quadrilateral if you know the measures of the other three angles. Use at least 2 sentences.

After going over quiz problems and hw questions, we started lesson 4.2. This lesson is on how to find triangles congruent by using only 3 corresponding parts from each triangle. These methods are: SSS, SAS, and ASA. Check your notes and worksheet to learn what these abbreviations really mean!

Using the graphing calculator, we saw the relationship between the vertex, width, and direction of the parabolas for the equation y= a(x-h)^2 + k. Hopefully, you were able to follow it all.
We reviewed the steps for completing the square in order to get the vertex form for graphing parabolas.

We went over the method of solving quadratic equations called completing the square. This method is useful when quadratic equations can not be factored.

Today was a big day for theorems + a postulate. We went over the fact that when 2 parallel lines are cut by a transversal, corresponding and alternate interior angles are congruent and same-side interior angles are supplementary. Also, if a transversal is perpendicular to one parallel line, it is perpendicular to the other parallel line as well.

We began Chapter 2 today...We learned about conditional statements in if-then form, and converses. We also went over biconditionals-this is written with iff.

We continued using the graphing calculators to make scatterplots, find the line of best fit (least-squares line), and the reliability (correlation coefficient) of the data. This coefficient shows how closely the data points cluster around the line of best fit.

Today, we learned how to use a LOT of keys on the graphing calculator-for graphing data and finding the line of best fit for the data. We also learned how to find the reliability for a set of data. We went over 2 examples during class.

Today, we went over some real-life problems which involve linear equations. We constructed tables, graphs, and wrote the linear equation for each problem.

We had our first quiz today covering slope-intercept and point-slope form as well as other topics related to linear equations. An extra credit puzzle on parallel and perpendicular lines was given out after the quiz. To receive credit for this paper, ALL math work must be shown.

We went over the word problems involving linear equations (page 5) today.

EC problem......Find the equation of the line perpendicular to 12x + 4y = 8 which contains the point (3,-1)....For another point find the equation of the line parallel to 12x + 4y = 8 with the point (3,-1).

Both classes should now know how to find the midpoint of a line segment by construction (using a compass and straightedge). We also went over problems # 33-40 on page 16.

We went over how to write the equation of a line that is perpendicular to another line. We start with point-slope form, and end up with slope-intercept form.... The slopes of perpendicular lines are opposite reciprocals of each other. If the slope of one line = 2, the slope of the other
line = -1/2.

Algebra 2H pd 1
After answering the hw problems, we learned that parallel lines have the same slope, but different y-intercepts. We also learned that perpendicular lines have slopes that are opposite reciprocals of each other.
HW Worksheet 1.3 # 14-32 evens

EC problem.....Write the equation of the line perpendicular to -3x - 4y = 10 and having the same y-intercept as x + 3y = -5. If done correctly, I will count this ec double!

After going over the hw, we learned how to make daisy designs with our compasses. You are to create an original daisy design on a blank sheet of paper for next Wednesday....This project will count 20 points, and will be graded for being original, colorful, and containing at least 1 daisy design.

EC problem.....Tell why you can draw a regular hexagon with your straightedge after making a daisy design.

After going over some of the hw problems, we started lesson 1.2 on slopes and intercepts. We went over many examples of graphing linear equations as well.
