Students received their grades for the third quarter.
We learned how to solve equations with rational expressions. You must make sure the denominator is not equal to zero when you get the solutions. Solve the problems by multiplying all parts of the equation by the LCD.

After admiring the Polygon picture projects, we learned that isosceles triangles have several special properties. Their base angles are congruent, and the bisector of the vertex angle = the perpendicular bisector of the base of the triangle.

We are still working on SSS and SAS postulates for proving triangles congruent. Today, we went over many examples in class.

EC Draw two triangles with sides 3 cm, 4 cm, and 5 cm. If done correctly, each triangle should be a right triangle. Name your congruent triangles, and explain why they are congruent. What is meant by congruent?

We learned how to factor trinomials in two different ways. One way involves guess and check, and the other way involves factoring by grouping.

We began going over PRoofs today. We stuck with Lesson 4.1, and went over more examples from this lesson. We learned about the reflexive property for proofs.

Tomorrow will be a quiz on the Ferris Wheel problem, identifying the equation when shown its graph, and either a tangent, cotangent, cosecant, or secant graph for you to sketch. You may use your calculator to make the charts.

All classes finished taking the UCLA Diagnostic Test for determining readiness to proceed to the next level of mathematics. In about two weeks, I should receive a detailed printout from UCLA about your test results. Of course, I will share the results with all of you!

On Monday, we will continue with the unit on Probability. Make sure you have pages 42 and 45 done, since it will count TRIPLE the usual credits.
EC If you roll two dice 240 times, how many times do you expect to get the sum of 7 or 11? (Find the probability of this event, and then multiply by 240).

On Monday, we will be going over the midpoint formula. At this point, you should know and understand the distance and slope formulas, and be able to use them to prove that a quadrilateral is a parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus, or square.

We learned about the sum of the terms in a geometric sequence and how to find the sum if the geometric sequence is infinite. Your notes should contain the formulas.

EC problem....the end of a swinging pendulum 90cm long moves through 50cm on its first swing. Each succeeding swing is 9/10 of the preceding one. We went over the formulas for calculating the angles in a circle formed by 2 chords, by 2 tangents, by 2 secants, and by a secant and tangent. A worksheet with all of the formulas and examples of each was done during class.

After I collected the work on The Chocolate Factory, we learned how to figure out the ratios of similar solid figures. The key is to find the scale factor, then square each number for the area ratio, and cube each scale factor number for the volume ratio.

Today, we worked on a concept lesson to determine the best type of container for selling chocolate. The choices were a cylinder, square prism, and triangular prism. Most students were surprised that the cylinder container had the most volume.
We also learned that doubling or tripling the dimensions of a rectangular prism make the volume cubed and the surface area squared.

Algebra 2H pds 1,2
After going over the quiz, we started the unit on word problems involving logarithms or natural logs. We went over two formulas - one for growth and decay, and the other for interest compounded continuously.

Today, we started the unit on Solids-3 dimensional figures. We learned how to compute the lateral area, total area, and volume of the right prism.

EC problem....Draw a right triangular prism. If the base edges are 3 cm,4 cm and 5 cm (right triangle base) and the height of the prism is 8 cm, find the LA, TA and Volume of this prism.

Today was the quiz on Exponential and Logarithmic Functions.
EC puzzle was given out after the quiz--it is due tomorrow.

We did an Activity Worksheet called The Baby, The Mama, and The Papa.
Hopefully, we learned that the ratio of similar figures follow a pattern.
a/b for perimeter or sides, a^2/b^2 for the areas, and a^3/b^3 for the volumes.
Tomorrow, we start learning about surface area and volumes of solids (3 dimensional figures).
No hw tonight!
EC Question....If the ratio of 2 similar triangles is 3:7, find the ratio of their areas and the ratio of their volumes.

After admiring everyone's mandala projects, we reviewed for tomorrow's quiz on Areas of Regular Polygons. We did Quick Draw for Points to review.

HW Be prepared for tomorrow's quiz. Study the formulas! Bring a scientific calculator if you want to try the bonus problem.

EC problem....If there is a regular decagon, what would be the measure of its central angle? Try to sketch one.

We used our calculators to find logs of numbers in base 10 as well as antilogs of numbers (answer when the log is given).

We klearned that the area formula for any regular polygon is pa/2 (perimeter times apothem divided by 2)

HW Worksheet # 3-9 all and #15-19 all.

EC problem...Draw a regular equilateral triangle. If its apothem = 6cm, find the perimeter and then the area of this figure.

All students in Algebra Two must have scientific calculators for the lessons on Logarithms!!!!

Pds 1,2 Today, we went over the properties of logarithms. We went over how to expand log expressions and then write the expansion as one log expression. We also learned how to solve Log Equations.

By Monday, I expect ALL algebra 2 students to have a scientific calculator for use in class and for the homework.
Today, we went over the hw problems and started the section on the Properties of Logs.
We learned that when you multiply logs with the same base, you actually add the logs. We also will find out that when you divide logs with the same base, you subtract the logs.
No hw due to the mininum day schedule.

EC Question- Tell how the technology used in today's lesson helped you to better understand the first property of logs.

We reviewed the more difficult hw problems. We practiced some problems in class to prepare for Monday's quiz.
The quiz will cover circumference and area of a circle, length of an arc, and areas of sectors and segments. The quiz will be VERY similar to the Practice Quiz you did for Thursday. All formulas must be memorized.

EC problem....Draw a circle with a 12 cm radius. Find its area and circumference using pi in your answer, and then find the same answers using 3.14 as pi.

After reviewing the problems on inverses of functions, we started the new topic: Logarithms. Logs are simply exponents. All students must know how to solve log equations by changing them into exponential form. Also, students must know how to write exponential equations in log form.

After going through the hw problems, we learned how to find the area of a segment of a circle. The formula is: Area of Sector - Area of Triangle.
HW Practice Test Do ALL problems--Show work!

EC problem---Draw a circle with a sector whose central angle = 90º. If the radius = 12 cm, find the area of the segment bound by the two radii and the 90º arc.

After I collected last night's hw, we learned the formula for the area of a circle as well as the formula for the area of a sector of a circle (bounded by 2 radii and an arc). We filled out the notes and formulas on a cw paper.

EC problem...Find the difference in area between a pizza with a 20 inch diameter compared to a pizza with a 16 inch diameter.

Today, we finished going over the inverses of functions. We learned that one-to-one functions have inverses that are also functions. If a function is NOT one-to-one, then its inverse is NOT a function (parabola).

After going over the hw problems, we learned how to find the length of an arc of a circle. You must memorize this formula.

EC problem...Find the length of an arc of a circle of radius 15cm if the arc's central angle measures 72º.

After going over the CST answers and the hw on exponential functions, we started Lesson 9-2. This lesson is on The Inverses of Functions. Just switch x with y, and solve for the new y. Both graphs should be symmetric to the line y=x.

All work from the past two days was collected.
We started the lesson on Circles. Terms like arcs, adjacent arcs, circumference, major and minor arcs, semicircles, and central angles were taught.

EC problem.....Draw Circle O with diameter AD. Place point B in the upper part of your circle. If arc AB measures 53º, find the measure of major arcs BDA, arc BD, and central angles AOB and BOD. Name a semicircle as well.

It is VERY important for ALL students to have a scientific calculator for the chapter that we're currently studying (Logarithms and Exponential Functions). Please be responsible and have your own calculator available for classroom use.
Having said that, today we derived the value of e, an irrational number used in many mathematical calculations. We also learned the formula for continuous interest.

Today was the long awaited test on Areas of Polygons. Hopefully, all of you studied and did well.

We started Chapter 9 today. It will cover Exponential Functions and Logarithms.
Today, we graphed equations in the form y=a^x. We also learned that exponential graphs have asymptotes, and grow or decay quite fast.

We are reviewing for the test on Areas of Polygons, which will be on Wednesday.
After going over the hw answers, students received a review worksheet.

Today, we graphed parabolas using the graphing parabola. Students learned how to use the trace key to figure out solutions for graphing.

Hopefully, everyone has memorized the Quadratic Formula by now. It will be used for many future math lessons.
Today, we went over the discriminant and its uses about the nature of the solutions in a quadratic equation. We also covered how to write an equation if we know its solutions ahead of time. Also, we solved for k in a discriminant related problem.

Tomorrow is the BIG TEST on Trigonometry. Make sure you understand SOHCAHTOA and its uses in solving right triangle problems. Review the word problems we covered in class. Also, make sure you bring your calculator to class tomorrow.

HW Worksheet on Sine, Cosine, and Tangent. Bring the Quick Draw Paper to class as well.

EC problem....Right triangle ABC has sides of 12, 16 and 20. If C is the right angle, find the sine, cosine, and tangent of angle B.

After going over the quiz problems, we started Chapter 8. Today's lesson was on solving quadratic equations by taking the square root or by completing the square.

We reviewed the hw worksheet on Sine and Cosine. Then, students received a similar worksheet to do for homework tonight.
EC problem...In solving trigonometry problems, why must you know all three ratios(sine, cosine, and tangent) and not just one or two of them?

Today, we learned the sine and cosine ratios. SineA= opposite/hypotenuse,
and cosineA = adjacent/hypotenuse.
An easy way to remember the ratios is SOHCAHTOA.

EC problem....A right triangle has hypotenuse= 64 cm. One of the acute angles
is 54º. Find the measure of each leg of the triangle.

We started the unit on Trigonometry today. We went over how to use the tangent ratio to solve problems with right triangles. You will need a scientific calculator for this unit.
HW Worksheet 8.3. Try to do all problems.
EC problem....A ladder leaning against a building makes a 42º angle with the ground. The ladder is 10 feet from the building. Find the height of the building. (Use the tangent ratio.)
