Algebra 2H pds 1,2
Hopefully, everyone has memorized the Quadratic Formula by now. It will be used for many future math lessons.
Today, we went over the discriminant and its uses about the nature of the solutions in a quadratic equation. We also covered how to write an equation if we know its solutions ahead of time. Also, we solved for k in a discriminant related problem.

HW pages 494-495 #3,7,11,13,17,21,27,35, and 39.
EC problems page 494 #20 and page 484 #52.


Geometry H pds 3,5,6
Tomorrow is the BIG TEST on Trigonometry. Make sure you understand SOHCAHTOA and its uses in solving right triangle problems. Review the word problems we covered in class. Also, make sure you bring your calculator to class tomorrow.

HW Worksheet on Sine, Cosine, and Tangent. Bring the Quick Draw Paper to class as well.

EC problem....Right triangle ABC has sides of 12, 16 and 20. If C is the right angle, find the sine, cosine, and tangent of angle B.

Today, we learned the derivation of the Quadratic Formula and how to use it to solve quadratic equations. We also sang the formula to the tune of "Pop Goes The Weasel".

The test on Trigonometry will be on Friday. Today, we went over the hw worksheet. Then students worked together or separately to solve a worksheet of word problems in which the pictures needed to be drawn as well as the problems needed to be solved.
HW Finish any problems not finished during class.

EC Question Why should this unit be the easiest one to get a great grade on when the test is given? Answer in at least 3 sentences.

The Trigonometry Test will be this Friday....Today, we covered word problems involving the Angles of Elevation and Depression with trigonometry.
HW Worksheet 8.5 Do all problems!

EC problem...A tree casts a 10 foot shadow. How tall is the tree if the angle of elevation of the sun is 54º? Draw a picture and solve.

Week of February 23rd

Algebra 2H pds 1,2
After going over the quiz problems, we started Chapter 8. Today's lesson was on solving quadratic equations by taking the square root or by completing the square.
HW page 475 # 3,7,11,13,19,25,29,35,37,39, and 43. The last four problems are solved by completing the square.
EC problem # 44

Geometry H pds 3,5,6
We reviewed the hw worksheet on Sine and Cosine. Then, students received a similar worksheet to do for homework tonight.
EC problem...In solving trigonometry problems, why must you know all three ratios(sine, cosine, and tangent) and not just one or two of them?

Today was the quiz on Radicals and Complex Numbers.

By now, all of you should have calculators for our unit on Trigonometry.
Today, we learned the sine and cosine ratios. SineA= opposite/hypotenuse,
and cosineA = adjacent/hypotenuse.
An easy way to remember the ratios is SOHCAHTOA.
HW Worksheet-on Sine and Cosine. Do all problems!

EC problem....A right triangle has hypotenuse= 64 cm. One of the acute angles
is 54º. Find the measure of each leg of the triangle.

Today, the Valentines Poems were due.
Most of them were extremely well done!

We started the unit on Trigonometry today. We went over how to use the tangent ratio to solve problems with right triangles. You will need a scientific calculator for this unit.
HW Worksheet 8.3. Try to do all problems.
EC problem....A ladder leaning against a building makes a 42º angle with the ground. The ladder is 10 feet from the building. Find the height of the building. (Use the tangent ratio.)

Our next test will be on Friday.
Today, we learned how to multiply and divide complex numbers. We learned that the product of two complex comjugate numbers is always a real number.
HW page 459 # 39,43,47,51,55,59,63,67,71,73, and 77.

We went over the quiz on Special Right Triangles. If you're not happy with your grade, you can take a make-up quiz after school tomorrow (Wednesday) or Thursday during lunch (You'll have less time if you take it during lunch).

HW Finish the work started during class-pages 428-429 # 1-6, #9-14, and# 17-22.

Hopefully, everyone will do the hw assignment this weekend (especially pd 1)!
Today, we learned about Complex Numbers (a+bi). We learned that i=the square root of -1. We also went over powers of i and addition/subtraction of complex numbers, as well as solving complex number equations.
HW pages 458-459 # 1,5,9,13,17,21,25,29,33, and 37.
EC problems....#8 and 40.

Today was the quiz on Special Right Triangles. I hope all of you learned the formulas for this lesson. Extra credit puzzle on PYthagorean Theorem was given out after the quiz. All work must be shown for the extra credit points.

Work on your Geometry Valentines Project this weekend. All valentines are due on Wednesday, February 18th.

Today, we finished learning about rational equations. We went over the equations where you have to square both sides of the equations twice. Cubic equations do not have to be checked.

EC problem...If the angles of a rhombus measure 120,60,120, and 60, and one diagonal is 30 cm, find the measure of each side of the rhombus.

Today, we went over the 30-60-90 right triangle. There are shortcut formulas for calculating each side of this type of triangle. You must also remember the formulas for the 45-45-90 right triangle as well.
HW Finish the worksheet # 10-27 all

EC problem. Draw an equilateral triangle with its altitude drawn from the top angle. If the altitude = 96 cm, find the measure of each side of the triangle and find the perimeter of this triangle.

After going over the hw on the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse, we learned the short-cut way to solve for the legs and hypotenuse of a 45-45-90 right triangle (isosceles right triangle).
HW Worksheet # 1-8 all

EC problem...Draw an isosceles right triangle. If the hypotenuse is 60 cm, what is the length of the two legs?

Second Semester

After everyone received the first semester grades, we continued with Chapter 7 on Radical Expressions. Today, we went over multiplying and dividing radical expressions. We learned how to use conjugates to rationalize denominators.

After receiving grades for the fall semester, we started Chapter 8-today's lesson was on the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse. We also learned how to simplifying radicals in radical form.

We are reviewing for the final exam for algebra 2a. Hopefully, ALL of you will take this test seriously so that I can see that you have learned the material for the semester. Binders will be checked while you take this important test.
Make sure that the review problems are done before you take the final exam.
