Algebra 2H pds 1,2
After finishing up the parabola problems (and they were problems!), we started Chapter 11 on Arithemtic Sequences.
Today, we learned how to find the nth term of an arithmetic sequence.

HW page 633 #1,5,9,13,17,21,25, and 31.

Geometry H pds 3,5,6
We covered many facts about chords and arcs of a circle today. All the information is on the worksheet we went over during class.
HW Worksheet #2 - Do ALL problems.

EC problem.....An equilateral triangle of 8 cm on each side is inscribed in a circle. Find the measure of the arcs formed by the sides of the triangle. Draw a picture of this situation.

After going over the test on Conics, we went through the parabola problems using the directrix and focus as a guide for the graph of the parabola.
HW worksheet # 28, 30 36 Pd 2 should also finish # 29.

EC problem # 39 (Remember that the vertex is the midpoint between the focus and directrix).

Geometry H pds 3,5,6
After taking the quiz on the Basic Terms of Circles, we went over the concept of tangents of a circle. There are internal and external tangents to two circles.
Circles can be internally or externally tangent to each other.
HW worksheet -Do ALL problems except # 4 on the top part.

EC problem....Draw two circles that are externally tangent. How many common external tangents do the circles have? How many common internal tangents do they have?

We learned that the algebra 2 definition of a parabola is the set of points that are equidistant from a point called the focus and a line called the directrix.
We also went over the formulas for the focus, directrix, and latus rectum.
HW pd 1 # 21, 23,29
pd 2 # 21,22,23.
Try to follow the formulas in the same order as they appear in the table.

There will be a short quiz on the basic terms of the circle tomorrow.
We learned some facts about tangents in the circle.
HW Finish the worksheet we began during class.

EC problem....Bring in examples of company logos that use the circle.

Today was the quiz on Conics.
HW Draw the parabola formed in The Parabolic Envelope. We will discuss the parabola tomorrow.

Geometry H pds 3,5,6
Today, we started the unit on Circles. We will be learning how to find the measures of the different parts of the circle, like the measures of chords and arc. We will also learn how to find the measures of the different angles formed by chords, tangents, and secants.
On Wednesday, there will be a short quiz on the vocabulary and problems associated with the circle.

EC Draw circle A with your compass (if possible). Label radius AC, diameter CD, chord EF, secant FG, and tangent DH. Name the point of tangency.

Monday is the test on Conics and Graphing as well as Solving Equations of Conics algebraically. Make sure you understand every problem on the review sheet and you should do well.
You may check out Ms Burnham's weblog to see the solutions for the review sheet. Our question #5 is different from hers. All of the other ones are the same.

After I collected the work on The Chocolate Factory, we learned how to figure out the ratios of similar solid figures. The key is to find the scale factor, then square each number for the area ratio, and cube each scale factor number for the volume ratio.
HW Worksheet- Do all problems.
EC problem The volumes of 2 similar spheres are 729 cm^2 and 216 cm^2. Find the scale factor and the ratio of their areas.

Algebra 2H pds 1,2
We graphed conic section inequalities and started to solve systems of equations with conics and lines. We will solve these problems algebraically.
HW page 607 # 1,3,7,9, and 11
EC problems #6 and # 12.

Geometry H pds 3,5,6
Today, we worked on a concept lesson to determine the best type of container for selling chocolate. The choices were a cylinder, square prism, and triangular prism. Most students were surprised that the cylinder container had the most volume.
We also learned that doubling or tripling the dimensions of a rectangular prism make the volume cubed and the surface area squared.

EC problem---How did today's lesson help you to better understand volume and area of containers with the same height but different bases?

We finished the lesson on hyperbolas by going over completing the square to get the standard form for graphing hyperbolas. We also went over point-slope form for the equation of the asymptotes and the coordinates of the foci.
HW pages 599-600 # 38-41 all and # 48.

We went over the formulas for the surface area and volume of spheres.
HW- Finish the worksheet started during class # 1-14 all.

EC problem A sphere has a volume of 1372 pi/3. Find its radius and area.

After going over the problems on ellipses, we started learning about the next conic section-the hyperbola. Examples were done during class.
HW page 599 #13,17,21,35, and 36.
EC Find real life examples of the hyperbola and ellipse on the internet, and bring your examples to class. What company logos use ellipses as part of their design?

Today was the District Quarterly Test on Areas and Volumes, as well as trigonometry.
No hw, other than finishing the problems on pyramids and cones from Wednesday's lesson.
EC Find real-life examples of pyramids, cones, and cylinders on the internet. Bring your findings to class.

We went over the graphs of ellipses in which the center is NOT at the origin. We also learned how to complete the square in order to get the equation of the ellipse in standard form. Be careful how you write the coordintes of the foci!
HW page 599 # 29-34 all

EC problem....Write the equation of the following ellipse in standard form:
9x^2 +4y^2 - 18x + 16y = 11. Give the coordinates of the foci (2 points if correct!).

HW worksheet # 1,2,3,5,8, and 9.
EC problem....Draw a cone with radius 9cm. If the slant height is 15 cm, find the height, LA, TA and Volume.

Today, we learned about the ellipse, another conic section. It has 2 foci, a major axis and a minor axis.

Today, we went over the vocabulary and formulas for the lateral area, total area, and volume of a pyramid.
HW- pd 3 class Worksheet # 7-12 all.
Pds 5,6 Finish all problems on today's worksheet.
EC problem....Draw a square pyramid with height 8 cm. If the base edge is 12 cm, find the LA, TA, and Volume of this pyramid.

Week of April 13th

Algebra 2H pds 1,2

Today, we started the chapter on the Conic Sections, which include the parabola, circle, ellipse, and hyperbola. Today's lesson focused on the circle.
We went over the standard form for the equation of a circle, how to sketch a circle given its equation, and how to complete the square to find the center and radius.
HW pages 589-590 # 1,5,9,13,17,21,25,29, 33, and 39.
EC problem page 589 # 38

Geometry H pds 3,5,6
Due to today's field trip, students attending class worked on a geometry puzzle involving 3 dimensional figures. Students completing the work received a Snickers candy.
Tomorrow, we will begin the study of the pyramids.
No HW tonight!
