Week of February 28th

Algebra 2H pds 1,4
We learned how to solve equations with rational expressions. Not all solutions are acceptable. If the solution makes the denominator = 0, then it is called extraneous and there is NO solution.
The main step for solving these equations is to multiply EACH term by the LCD.
HW pages 384-386 #1,5,9,13,33,37,41,45,49, and 67.

To review for the quiz on Special Right Triangles, we did an activity called Quick Draw for points, where students earn points for showing the steps as well as getting the correct answer for the problem.
HW Worksheet on Special Right Triangles- Do ALL problems.
Quiz on Special Right Triangles is tomorrow.
EC Question- What method did you use to learn the formulas for solving the sides of the 45-45-90 and 30-60-90 right triangles? How long did it take to learn these formulas?

We continued going over the formulas for the Special Right Triangles.
Memorize them or else!!!!
HW- Finish the worksheet that you began during today's class.
Know the formulas perfectly!
EC question- If an equilateral triangle has an altitude of 36 cm, find its perimeter.

Trig pd 6 After going over the hw questions, we learned how to write complex numbers in trigonometric form and vice versa.

We reviewed for tomorrow's quiz on Algebraic Fractions. Please review the separate procedures for adding/subtracting and multiplying/dividing fractions. Also, review complex fractions.

The projects on Block Lettering were very nice!
Today, we learned the shortcuts for finding the sides of 2 special right triangles. They are the 45-45-90 and 30-60-90 right triangles. You must MEMORIZE the formulas!
HW Worksheet # 10-20 ALL
EC problem-The longer leg of a 30-60-90 right triangle is 27 cm. Find the length of the short leg and the hypotenuse.

Trig pd 6
We reviewed complex numbers today. They will be used in future lessons on Polar Graphing and trigonometric functions.

Today was the Test on Special Quadrilaterals.

EC problem- A rhombus has one angle = 56º. Draw the rhombus and its diagonals. Find the measure of each angle in your picture.

Today was the quiz on the Law of Sines, Ambiguous Case, and the Law of Cosines.
No HW.
EC- A parallelogram with diagonals of 36 cm and 54 cm have the diagonals meeting at a 72º angle. Find the length of the longer side. Draw a picture.

Algebra 2H pds 1,4
After reviewing several hw problems on adding or subtracting algebraic fractions, we learned about Complex Fractions. These fractions have a fraction in either the numerator, denominator, or both.

Tomorrow is the quiz on Special Quadrilaterals. These include the parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus,square, and trapezoid.

EC- Explain in your own words the differences and similarities between a rhombus and rectangle.

Trigonometry pd 6
We review for the quiz tomorrow. Topics are the Law of Sines (ASA or AAS), Ambiguous Case (SSA). and the Law of Cosines (SSS or SAS).
EC problem - Explain why the ambiguous case exists for triangles in which SSA is given.

We spent another day on the lesson of Adding and Subtractingalgebraic Fractions.
A cw puzzle was completed in class.
HW-Complete the new puzzle worksheet on this topic. If correct, you will know why Mrs. Plum yelled "Shouldn't, Couldn't, Wouldn't, Didn't, Can't" just before giving birth to her first child.

We finished going over all of the work on the Quadrilaterals. There will be a test on the Special Quadrilaterals next Wednesday.
HW -Work on your projects of Block Lettering-due Wednesday February 23rd.
EC problem - The median of a trapezoid has length 3x. One of the bases has length of
4x + 12. Find the value of x and the length of the other base.

Trig pd 6
Our next quiz will be on Wednesday. A practice test was given out today.
HW Finish the problems on the Practice Test.

EC problem - A plane is flying with an airspeed of 250 mph with heading 130º. The wind currents are running at a constant 42 mph at 150º clockwise from due north. Find the true couse and groundspeed of the plane.

After reviewing some the extra long hw problems, we learned about addition and subtraction of rational expressions. Never add denominators!

After reviewing the properties of the rectangle, parallelogram, rhombus, and square, we learned about the trapezoid and the isosceles trapezoid. Trapezoids only have ONE pair of opposite sides parallel. Isosceles trapezoids have congruent legs(non-parallel sides) and base angles congruent also.

EC- On the Internet, find real life pictures of trapezoids and rhombuses.

We continued going over problems related to the Law of Cosines.

We learned how to multiply and divide rational expressions. Most of the work involves factoring and cancelling the same factors in numerator and denominator.

After the quiz on the 5 ways to prove that a quadrilateral is a parallelogram, we went over the new art project on BLOCK LETTERING. It is due one week from today-February 23rd.
We also learned the special properties of a rectangle, rhombus, and square.

Trig pd 6
We continued going over the ambiguous case for a triangle in which SSA is given.
Problems with degrees and minutes appear to be more difficult to solve.
We went over the Derivation for the Law of Cosines plus one example of using it to solve a triangle. Use the law of Cosines when given SAS or SSS.

After going over the long division problems, we learned a shortcut way of dividing polynomials called synthetic division. It only works if the divisor is in the form
(x-a).

After reviewing the properties of a parallelogram, we learned the five ways to prove that a quadrilateral is a parallelogram. There will be a short quiz on listing these 5 ways tomorrow. You will have to draw a diagram and write the words for each way.

After reviewing the hw problems on the Law of Sines, we learned about the ambiguous case, which occurs when the given information for the triangle is SSA. There can be 0,1, or 2 solutions for the triangle.

Week of February 14th

Algebra 2H pds 1,4
After going over the new semester letter, we learned about dividing polynomials by monomials,by factoring the numerator and then cancelling one of the factors with the denominator, and by long division. Long division is needed when the polynomials do not divide out evenly.
HW pages 355-356 #3,7,11,15,19,23,27,31, and 35.
Also, make sure your parents sign the new semester letter!

Geometry H pds 2,5
After going over the new semester letter, we learned all about the parallelogram. By definition, it is a quad. with BOTH pairs of opposite sides parallel. It also has 3 important properties: 1) Both pairs of opposite sides are congruent.
2) Both pairs of opposite angles are congruent.
3) Diagonals BISECT each other.
HW Worksheet # 1-9 ALL

EC problem-Draw parallelogram GRAM. If angle G = 116º, find the measures of the other 3 angles. If GR = 3x + 12 and and MA = 2x - 6, find x and GR.

Trig pd 6
We went over problems related to the Law of Sines. Use the law of sines when you know 2 angles and a side of a triangle. The Law of Sines can be used to solve any triangle problem, not just right triangles.

Finals Week-February 7-11th

To ALL of my classes:
Hopefully, all of you will review what I've been going over in class recently. Algebra Two and Trigonometry classes should know all of the problems on the review sheets.
Geometry classes should review the recent classwork and topics mentioned for the final exam during today's class. You will be taking the District Quarterly Test as well as a short multiple choice final.

All students must bring binders to class for a major grade-it's worth as much as any test-100 points!
Good luck on all of your finals!!!
